The philosophy at
River Rock is to produce Canaan Dogs of exceptional temperament,
excellent health and quality in type conforming to the breed's standard.
All puppies are socialized with other dogs and people. Breeding stock
must pass a battery of genetic and health tests. These tests include,
but are not limited to, OFA (hips/elbows/patella), CERF (eyes), thyroid
check and all tests required by the Parent Club's Code of Ethics. The
'type' of Canaan Dogs owned and produced by River Rock are the classic
Type 3 Pariah Dog described and preferred by the Drs. Menzel.
We are in the eastern suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia. We are a small
hobby kennel
geared towards AKC conformation and performance events. Chris has been active in
purebred dogs and AKC events for over 30 years. She became enchanted with the
Canaan Dog in 1997 and has been active with the breed since 1998.
Versatility is another important factor at River Rock. Obedience, Agility,
Herding and Tracking are the other areas that Chris involves the dogs. We look
forward to adding CD's, RN's, NA's, HC's and TD's to our Canaan Dogs.
Chris is a member in good standing of the following clubs: Canaan Dog Club of
America (past Secretary and Board Member), Great Dane Club of America, Southern Classic
Canaan Dog Club, Conyers Kennel Club, and
Conyers-Rockdale Humane Society (past Board Member).
Chris began to be
intrigued with the Canaan Dog in the summer of 1997, the year they
gained full recognition to the American Kennel Club. She had had Great
Danes for many years through her parent's kennel. When she was first
married, she decide on the Pembroke Welsh Corgi as the breed to begin
River Rock Farm. As time passed, it became apparent that an additional
breed needed to be added. Through much research and many hours of
talking to various breeders, the Canaan Dog was the obvious choice.
Chris wanted to stay in the Herding Group and had grown to enjoy the
intelligence and thought process of most Herding breeds. The Canaan Dog,
being rather unique in their naturalness truly captivated her. And once
she met her first Canaan Dogs, she was hooked.
Some of the attributes that attracted Chris to the breed were their
size, intelligence, healthiness, longevity and humor. A brief
description of the Canaan Dog follows:
The Canaan Dog, also known as Kelev K'naani, is a recent breed out of
ancient Pariah Dog stock, and is the unique project of a pair of
scientists, Drs. Rudolph and Rudolphina Menzel, dog experts and world
authorities on Pariah Dogs, who loved Pariah Dogs and considered them
worthy progenitors of what would become the modern Canaan Dog.
The Canaan Dog possesses extremely keen senses of hearing and smell, and
can detect approaching intruders from a considerable distance, becoming
instantly alert. They are an intelligent, trainable breed whose tracking
ability is excellent. They show definite talent as stock dogs and are
able to compete in herding events. When raised with children and other
pets, he becomes a devoted family companion and natural watchdog. They
are aloof with strangers, inquisitive, loyal and living with their
family. Because of the strong 'denning' instinct of their recent
semi-wild past, the Canaan Dog is naturally clean and easily
housebroken. Canaan Dogs do not require an excessive amount of exercise.
The medium-size, square body of the Canaan Dog is without extremes,
showing a clear, sharp outline. They move with athletic agility and
grace in a quick, brisk, ground-covering trot. They have a wedge-shaped
head with low-set erect ears, a bushy tail that curls over the back when
excited and a straight, harsh, flat-lying double coat.
